Every year, thousands of visitors from around the world arrive in Pamplona, Spain, to join in the “Running of the Bulls”. But tourists are often appalled when they see terrified animals racing through streets that are packed with drinking, brawling people. The bulls’ hooves slip on the pavement as they frantically try to escape the chaos. Sometimes, in their confusion, they bash into doors or the sides of buildings, breaking horns or legs. Human runners and spectators gouge them with sticks or pull their tails, and they, too, are sometimes injured, gored or trampled by bulls who are desperate to escape. What awaits the animals that afternoon is even more gut-wrenching. Already traumatised bulls are tortured in bullfights, in which they are repeatedly stabbed and bled in order to weaken them, and bullfighters sever the animals’ spines while they are still conscious. All the cool kids are doing it. The “Running of the Nudes” attracts hundreds of people from around the world, so it’s the perfect place to make new friends who are just as compassionate and fun-loving as you are. It’s not every day that you get to hit the streets wearing plastic bullhorns and body paint. You know, it really would be a good look for you … You’ll be a tourist attraction! Every year, the Running of the Nudes is performed with such passion and positive energy that it’s a tourist attraction in its own right. You don’t need to worry about which outfit to wear. Just pack your toothbrush and sun block and come as you are. After all, the dress code is very casual! Plus, no tan lines! We can’t think of a better way to have fun in the sun and work on a whole-body tan. The party’s on PETA. At the finish line, we’ll treat you to the best street party in Pamplona – complete with local music, food, drink and entertainment. It’s not cool to be cruel. Spain’s Running of the Bulls is a notoriously cruel spectacle – one in which bulls never stand a chance. During the run, bulls are injured and tormented by throngs of people who yank their tails and jab at them with sharp sticks as the animals scramble through slippery streets. In the arena, bulls are stabbed repeatedly to weaken them through blood loss and are forced to run in circles to make them so dizzy and disoriented that they cannot defend themselves. After prolonged agony, the matador (Spanish for “killer”) kills them by putting a sword through their spine. The Running of the Nudes was born in Pamplona in 2002, when 25 nude people streaked through the winding streets to protest the cruel and bloody bull run and subsequent bullfights. 2003 The second annual Running of the Nudes was six times bigger than the inaugural event, with 150 activists taking to the streets of Pamplona, 2004: More Than 350 Runners in Pamplona 2005 Six hundred people from all over the world participated in the fourth annual Running of the Nudes, wearing red scarves, horns, body paint and little else. More than 90 Spaniards attended, thanks in part to a Pamplona newspaper that included the Running of the Nudes in its official San Fermín Festival guide. The event garnered international media coverage, including in Belgium, France, Latvia, Greece, Italy, England, Scotland, Ireland, Portugal, Spain, Germany, Croatia, Denmark, the Czech Republic, Poland and even Australia! Olympians Sally Gunnell and Cathy Freeman and singer Chrissie Hynde wrote to Pamplona Mayor Yolanda Barcina Angulo in support of the Running of the Nudes, and PETA President Ingrid E. Newkirk invited US Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld, who has attended the bull run in the past, to show his compassion and attend the nude run. Secretary Rumsfeld did not RSVP, but we remain hopeful that one day we’ll see more of him! 2006 This year was the biggest “Running of the Nudes” ever! Just two days before the first bull run, more than 1,000 people, most wearing little more than a red scarf and horns, ran through the streets of Pamplona. It was an amazing party—a real fiesta—complete with musicians and with people dancing and marching through the streets to show Pamplona that it doesn’t need to torture animals for tourism.
